BARRIER on prosessi. Se on siirtymä liminaalitilaan. Rajamaahan, jossa kieli ja merkitys kohtaavat – ehkä kumoten toisensa.

Alexandra Marina kutsuu yleisön mukaan aktiiviseen taiteellisen tutkimuksen prosessiin. BARRIER käsittelee hänen ristiriitaista suhdettaan suomen kieleen ja sen puhujiin ruotsinkielisenä pohjanmaalaisena. Niin paljon on kadonnut ja jäänyt kokematta väärinymmärrysten sävyttämän elämän aikana, ja nyt hän tarkastelee ja laajentaa suhdettaan kielen rajan tuolle puolen. Tämä raja, joka ennen tuntui fyysiseltä ja aavemaiselta koko maata jakavalta voimalta, on nyt murrettavana.

Taiteilija palaa intiimeihin kertomuksiin jännitteistä ja vastenmielisyyksistä, jotka ovat syntyneet väärinymmärryksen rajamailla. Osa niistä tarkastelee ja kaivaa esiin hänen suhdettaan suomen kieleen, ja hän painaa vanhoja haavoja nähdäkseen niiden rajat. Osa kertomuksista ei liity lainkaan ruotsiin tai suomeen, vaan käsittelee muita kommunikaation esteitä – mutta ne ovat saaneet näyttämönsä tuossa kielellisessä rajamaassa. Hän puhaltaa suukkoja vanhoihin haavoihin antaakseen anteeksi niiden rajat.

Kieli voi rajoittaa. Ehkä hauraassa, vapisevassa yrityksessä kommunikoida voi kokea enemmän inhimillisyyttä.

Näyttely sisältää vuorovaikutteisia ja rituaalisia elementtejä, joissa taiteilija kutsuu ihmiset luottamaan siihen, ettei todellinen ymmärrys vaadi täydellistä kielitaitoa. Suurin osa teoksista ja teksteistä on ruotsiksi ja suomeksi, mutta näyttely kutsuu kaikkia, jotka ovat joskus pohtineet, miten kieli voi muuttua esteeksi.

BARRIER is a process. It is a crossing into liminal space. A borderland where language and meaning meet, perhaps negating both.

Alexandra Marina offers an invitation into an active process of artistic research. BARRIER deals with her troubled relationship to the Finnish language and its people as a Swedish-speaking person from Ostrobothnia. So much has been lost and missed during a life of misunderstanding, and she is now examining and expanding her relationship to the land beyond the language barrier. This barrier, that once felt like a physical and haunting thing dividing the country, is now being penetrated.

The artist returns to intimate stories of tensions and aversions created in borderlands of misunderstanding. Some of them examine and excavate her relationship to the Finnish language, and she is pressing on old wounds to see their borders. Some of the stories have nothing to do with Swedish and Finnish, they deal with other communication barriers, but they took stage in that linguistic borderland. She is blowing kisses on old wounds to forgive their borders.

Language can be limiting. Maybe in the vulnerability of a trembling attempt to communicate, more humanity can be experienced. The exhibition includes interactive, and ritual elements where the artist invite people to trust that true understanding does not need perfect language skills. Most works and texts are in Swedish and Finnish, but the exhibition invites anyone who has wondered how tongue could become barrier.

Alexandra Marina (b. 1986) works multi-artistically from an intersectional, feminist perspective as a fat, queer and chronically ill artist. Her focus is often on the body within different contexts; history, society, healthcare and interpersonal relationships. She is often very intimate in her art and creates a brutal interplay between personal life, body, and art, but also uses grey areas of auto fiction and completely fictional narratives to create new angles and entrances to her central themes.

She has worked broadly within art and culture for 15 years, and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Film- and TV-production as well as Fine Arts.Alexandra Marina also exhibits at Luovake’s Vitriini-gallery, and will facilitate a workshop at Luovake on May 9th with embodied and alternative self-portraiture.
